SACRED CHICKENS
RED QUEEN by Victoria Aveyard Red Queen packs a lot into three hundred pages: political intrigue, lots of action, romance, and well written world building. Everything moves so quickly and seamlessly that you find yourself lost in the novel, swept away in a hurricane and carried off to a darker version of Oz, where anyone can betray anyone else. The book portrays a society that is divided in two, the Red commoners and the elite Silvers, who have super human powers. Mare Barrow is a Red who lives in the impoverished Stilts with her family. She is sure that since she is nearly of age and without employment that she will be forcibly conscripted into the military, to fight the Silvers’ war until she starts working at the Silver Palace, surrounded by the people she despises most. Here, she learns that even though she has Red blood, she possesses an incredibly dangerous power of her own. To keep the balance of power intact, the Royal Family takes her into hiding among them, as a long lost heir, now engaged to a Silver prince. However, while she is learning to tolerate etiquette lessons and the Queen’s fearsome power, Mare assists the Red Guard, a terrorist organization intent on abolishing the monarchy. I flew through this book. It grabbed me from the very first page, and I’m obsessed with it now. There are layers upon layers of political intrigue, secrets, and lies, forming a gigantic web that’s extremely fragile and tense. I completely recommend giving it a read if you like fantasy and a fast paced adventure.
