SACRED CHICKENS
A Haunted Death by Susan Dorsey Review by Julie Carpenter This is the latest outing for Jane Brooks and her friend Rodney, a pair of hairdressers who can’t quite stay out of trouble. This time Rodney insists that the two of them attend a séance and filming of a ghost hunting show at the home of one of Rodney’s clients, an event that spooks Jane from the outset, but neither of them is prepared for the truly terrifying results. Instead of ghosts, they see a corpse and then death begins to stalk some the evening’s participants. Dorsey sets the mysteries in Knoxville, TN where Jane and Rodney own a hair salon together. She keeps this mystery fresh with an eerie atmosphere and the possibility of supernatural interference. The fact that the story takes place in the autumn and begins with a séance gives it just the right creep factor. This series depends on the interplay between the characters and this time out Dorsey adds a twist as Jane’s demanding sister insists on showing up to crash Jane’s Thanksgiving holiday celebration with Rodney. Between the haunting, family dynamics and a hairstyling disaster, Jane finds her pleasant world seriously shaken. The familiarity and affection the reader has for the characters makes the suspense all the more chilling as we root for them to outwit death and with each book we become more attached to Jane and her friends. All in all, this is a fun, spooky read with a sense of humor. This makes a great entry point into the series; but don’t miss out on Dorsey’s other Jane Brooks mysteries: A Civil Death and A Discriminating Death.
